Today is my birthday and I want to give you all the gift of Extra Virgin Olive Oil! Extra virgin olive oil (or EVOO) has been used for beauty purposes for thousands of years. Not only is extra virgin olive oil delicious and a healthy option for cooking, it is great for your skin and hair.
While we all know that EVOO is high in calories and fat, it’s important to know that it is high in oleic acid which is a monounsaturated, omega-9 fatty acid. In recent studies, oleic acid is strongly linked to lowering cholesterol and your risk for cancer. EVOO is one of the only oils to have an extremely high precentage of this acid; up to 75%. So if you can spare the calories, even taking a tablespoon of EVOO in the morning with your breakfast is great for your health and also aids in digestion for the rest of the day as it is also a natural anti-inflammatory for your intestines. It is also full of natural antioxidants which is good for your heart!
Now, enough of the science, you want to know how you can use EVOO in your beauty routine!
First, it’s important to know that the oil molecules are actually too big to sit in your pores, so it is Non-comedogenic. Here are a few great ways to incorporate EVOO into your beauty routine:
Eye Makeup Remover
All you need to do is add a few drops to a cotton pad and gently wipe your eye makeup away. This is also great for your eye area as well. The skin around your eye doesn’t produce any oils, so the EVOO will moisturize the skin!
Extra Virgin Olive Oil Scrub
There are a couple of ways that you can incorporate olive oil as a scrub for your face and body. We all know that it’s important to exfoliate your skin at least once a week, and I am a big fan of this scrub! 3 tbsp EVOO 2 tbsp honey 1/2 cup of sugar
Mix up these ingredients in a resealable, clean container. You can use this recipe to use as a scrub on your face and skin. I love to use this during the winter or before bed since it is so luxurious and moisturizing! Also, sugar is a natural healing agent, so this will help with any cuts or acne you may have.
Also, I personally haven’t used salt, but I know in Europe they use sea salt added to EVOO as a scrub for the face and body.
Nails and Cuticles
All you need to do is add a couple drops of EVOO to your nails and cuticles. This will keep your nails and cuticles moisturized and looking healthy!
Hair Treatment
If your hair has been lacking luster lately, you can use EVOO as a treatment on your scalp and strands! When used on your scalp it can actually help treat dandruff. All you need to do is mix equal parts EVOO and water and massage into your scalp and comb into the rest of your hair. Make sure you hair is dry when you do this. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, then shampoo and rinse. Your hair will be extremely moisturized and shiny! -
